Age 86, of Mt. Washington, on Saturday, January 21, 2012 in Pittsburgh. He is survived by his wife Nancy (Cross); father of his “four favorite daughters”, Mary Pat Murphy (Thomas), Katie Simcox (Dave), Anne Dever and stepdaughter Trudy Cross and son Jim Dever; stepsons Mark Cross (Jan),and Scott Cross (Wendy); 8 grandchildren: Kevin and Bryan Erdner, Megan and Collin Dever, Luke Arnold, Jamie Cross, Lauren Harmic (Jason) and Allison Cross;2 great-grandchildren:Nathan and Aaron Haramic; He was preceded in death by his sister Anna May, 2 brothers John and Eugene, both of Cleveland. His sister Joan Conrad and her husband Edward live in Westlake, OH and Naples, FL. His first wife Anne Marie (nee Schirmer) passed away in November 1974. Jim was born in Cleveland, Ohio of Bridget (Lavelle) and James Patrick. He enjoyed over 40 years, a full and exciting career, at News Paper Enterprise (NEA) and United Press International (UPI) as a photojournalist. He transferred to Pittsburgh, PA in 1966 when promoted to be the Eastern Division Picture Manager for UPI. He was in that position for 22 years and would always say he never missed a Kentucky Derby attending at least 30! He was assigned to photograph the Beatles in 1963. He stated they “would never make it as a band!” Other assignments included the photographs of the Queen of England while in Canada, sports favorites including Arnie Palmer and Larry Holmes, as well as mine disasters, floods and civil rights stories. He started his career in journalism when he served in the 24th Infantry Division as a combat correspondent during the Korean War; he was awarded two Bronze stars. Active in his community, he was one of the founders of the Mount Washington Community Development Corporation; he served as its Vice President for several years and started its newspaper. An active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Mount Washington Post 5111, he chaired an annual essay contest in the local Mt. Washington Grade Schools promoting writing skills. Prior to moving to Mt. Washington, he lived in Bethel Park. During his time in Bethel, he was a founder of the St. Valentine’s Men’s Club, taught CCD, served as an usher and enjoyed a forty year membership in the Yugoslav Club. He was known as a charming story teller, with the wit of the Irish. Family and friends are invited to attend a MEMORIAL MASS in St. Mary of the Mount Church, 403 Grandview Ave, Pittsburgh, on Friday, 11:30 a.m. , followed by Military Honors by VFW Post 5111. Friends will be received in the entrance of the church from 11:00-11:30 (prior to the beginning of Mass).
